Fall Blues – What Discoveries Await Us in Vienna?

23. October 2020

It’s Fall. We can give you our secret tips and suggestions for beautiful autumn days -- for a relaxed and adventure-filled time to brighten up the mood.

The Indian summer is helping Vienna retain its sunny mood -- despite the shadow of the coronavirus -- and the gloom of winter can wait a little longer until it appears. And so, we have taken another stroll through Vienna to find some special treats for a relaxed and adventure-filled time to brighten up the mood.

Fall Moments in Vienna

Vienna’s entertainment programme and its events are many and colourful, even though we have not quite got back our complete freedom. On sunny days, we can still do outdoor activities – and as Vienna is the greenest city in the world, there are plenty of these to choose from. #wienliebe

Here are our Top 3 outdoor activities in Vienna:

1. Outdoor Sport in Groups

We recommend sports activities in groups for those lazy-bones moments, when our discipline is weak. These have grown rapidly during the pandemic – one positive effect of the crisis. There are lots of exciting things to choose from – from yoga, fitness, Crossfit or hula hooping. The City of Vienna is also encouraging sports with its ”Free Gyms“ in local parks. There are six parks in the 10th district alone with freely accessible equipment.

2. Vienna Central Cemetery

You can find a large slice of Viennese culture and history not far from Hotel Schani Wien in Simmering: Vienna Central Cemetery is definitely worth a visit for those who have never set a foot on the 2 ½ square kilometre cemetery grounds. The cemetery is one of the most important sights in Vienna and an excellent destination on an autumn day thanks to its 330,000 graves and forest animals – it is especially well-known for its deer.

3. City Hiking Trail “Stadtwanderweg” 11 – Urban Council House Hiking Trail

On the trail of Vienna’s history. The new City Hiking Route 11 (Stadtwanderweg 11 ) is ideal for a journey through time and Vienna’s council house buildings. You can experience the city’s fauna and flora and history in close-up and in its original form on this two-hour long walk. It starts at Bruno Kreisky Park in the 5th District and ends at Reumannplatz with its historical swimming pool complex, the Amalienbad. You can find more information on this hiking trail here.

Bad Weather Alternatives

When the weather is bad and the sky is grey, you can still enjoy good times in Vienna.

4. Fall is “Sturm” Time

People who are ready for the “Sturm” -- new, still fermenting wine – should definitely visit one of Vienna’s Heurigen or Buschenschanken wineries. Autumn is high season on the “Heuriger” scene, and our secret tip is the winery and restaurant Frauneder in the 10th District.

5. Cosy Movie Experience

Action! Das Schikaneder has been making history since 1906 and is not far from Hotel Schani Wien – just 16 minutes using public transport. This cult club is currently not running to capacity, but still offers different three film shows a day. Tickets need to be reserved in advance and collected. Masks are only compulsory when collecting tickets and entering the building.
The revitalised drive-in Autokino in Großenzersdorf offers a more intimate atmosphere and is easily reached by vehicle. The optimal alternative for safe cinema. #staysafe

6. Coffeehouse Culture at Hotel Schani Wien

British teatime or Viennese coffeehouse flair? You can enjoy the food and refreshments of your choice at Hotel Schani Wien. Our comfortable Living Room and Lobby invites you to read, play and philosophize – all in Vienna coffeehouse style.

7. Albertina Modern

Vienna has just gained a new fine art jewel. The Albertina Modern at Karlsplatz has been home to one of the world’s largest collections of modern art since May 2020 and exhibits more than 60,000 works by 5,000 different artists in 2,000 square metres of space. It can be reached in 13 minutes by public transport from Hotel Schani Wien. Masks are mandatory, as are the generally accepted social distancing and hygiene rules.
